On this day trip, your cultural expert hosts you in the ancient city of Suzhou, famed for its sophisticated gardens that served as southern retreats for the Beijing gentry class during dynastic times. Please select your option on the tour request form.
Garden Tour Option:
Begin by exploring the Lion Grove Garden, renowned for its twisted passages and tunnels constructed by limestone rocks. The most recent owners were relatives of the famous architect IM Pei, who ‘donated’ the garden to the Chinese government in 1949. For lunch, we’ll dine on Suzhou cuisine in a historic Ming dynasty residence. Finally, wander PingJiang Street, a former scholar’s mecca with idyllic whitewashed homes and arched stone bridges, trendy studios and shopping venues.
Tiger Hill Tour Option:
A famous Chinese poet once penned, “It’s a lifelong regret if one doesn’t visit Tiger Hill.” Let’s visit the site of his inspiration-the focal point is a 1000-year old pagoda which has been leaning dramatically for quite some time. Ask we hike about the wooded three acres of hillside, your guides will spin the area’s classic legends and poetic inspiration. For lunch, we’ll dine on SuBang cuisine in a historic residence that was a childhood favorite of architect IM Pei. Afterwards, walk historic PingJiang Street-its ancient bridges and whitewashed homes takes one back in time to the leisured lifestyle of dynastic scholars.
